We are in a rut. History is all very well but we need to look to the future, to create what will be tomorrow’s history. What with so many conversions to places to stay, soon every major city will be metaphorically awash with hotels that were once prisons, schools and even office blocks….
Talking of awash, with sea levels rising around the world, what will happen to buildings in not only The Maldives and Venice but so many other destinations? Some architects are already designing homes that rise up and down a few feet, when the weather so determines. When will we have a truly floating hotel? Yes, plans have been mooted on and off, and there are already suites that only look out underwater, as at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai.
And Girlahead predicts we will see, in future, even more mobile hotels, in the form of floating hotels that are more like ships, and land-based properties that are like, per room or suite, an Overlander or luxury mobile RV recreational vehicle unit. There will also be more tented hotels, too. Amangiri leads the way, at luxury level. Kempinski’s return to Tanzania will include a tented camp, as will the ambitious plans for Saudi Arabia’s tourism – see a Foster & Partners design, above.
The future looks far from traditional, right?
