Luxury Hotels

Simply Sunday

Simple eggs, and a two-way salt and pepper mill

You can do basics with style, says the gal.  One of Asia’s most elegant hotels, The Upper House in Hong Kong, has a list of ‘regulars’ that runs from David Beckham, Victoria Beckham, and their friend Gordon Ramsay, through to Christian Louboutin and a host of other fashion names.  What do they like? The views (the hotel rises to the 49th floor), André Fu’s soft-coloured interiors, and chic staff who, if male, all seem to have the most amazingly groomed haircuts. According to the ultra-cool GM, Marcel Thoma, guests also like having their own dedicated Guest Experience Managers, the responsible person throughout an entire stay.

They may not say so, but unconsciously discerning guests obviously appreciate such little touches as simple eggs come simple, with none of that unasked-for-trash accompaniment of potatoes, salad and tomatoes that all too often ruin a presentation. Toast comes in a silver rack, and the combined salt and pepper mill is turn one way for the former, the other for the latter.

Oh, and by the way, back to regular guests here at this luxury hotel.  The GM will always be wearing Louboutin (he says he has 20 pairs to choose from). See above. See, too, why this hotel has an outstanding reputation.
