Luxury travel tip – source airline tickets carefully

Champagne all the way if you play your ticket-buying right

Simply Sunday. The gal is constantly aware of the need to have two browsers open when booking flights. Again and again it is less expensive to buy open-jaws (fly A to B and come back C to A, for instance), or to buy two one-way tickets rather than a return.  Here, however, is a real weirdo. Thinking of the need of checking Kazakhstan’s luxury hotels, I am working on Almaty.  A one-way ticket London Heathrow to Almaty is a staggering £1,320, in Economy.  A return ticket is £284 each way.  If you really wanted only a one-way ticket to Almaty, it pays hands-down to buy a return (two times £284 is £560).   Throw away the return and you have, in effect, saved £760…

The neurobics of luxury travel never cease to amaze.  By using one’s brain one gets a better deal.  Of course I will not be flying Economy, not on an overnight flight (outbound is overnight, return is day-time) – I want that champagne.  I am reminded that last week a good friend was invited to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by CNN, who offered only orange juice.  He had to buy his own champagne. Shame on CNN…
