Luxury travel is a people business, says Cari Gray

For Toronto-based Gray & Co., travel is a “people business” first, way before it’s a “going places” one.

Founder Cari Gray, seen above, to the left, with some of her colleagues, says even though they can’t be on the move now, “we’re busy connecting with, and taking virtual care of, our precious friends in all corners of the globe. From hoteliers, chefs and sommeliers to mechanics, pilots, drivers and expert guides, these invaluable folks work with us on our continuous quest for the best. Even now, only from our armchairs, we’re not afraid of the future. When we’re all ready to travel again, you’ll find that the Gray bar is raised higher than ever on our private journeys around the globe.

“Travel motivates, inspires and changes lives. For now, there’s much you can do from home to keep active, explore, help others, stay curious — and be safe.”

Cari Gray personally is usually continually on the go.  Just before lock-down, she returned from New Zealand.  As she says, their ‘friendly locals, outdoor beauty, and top-notch lodges have long been legendary. Gray & Co. is particularly partial to lesser-known but luxe active outposts. Wharekauhau Lodge, on the south tip of the North Island, is masterfully managed by dear friend Richard Rooney, as quick to offer up a homecrafted Light House gin as he is jump on an ATV with guests to explore black sand beaches.”

Sometimes Cari Gray travels with former Editor in Chief of Departures magazine, Richard David Story – the pair have hiked across tea plantations in China, biked through lavender fields in Provence and shared myriad meals in locations both near and far. He is now travel expert for Graydon Carter’s weekly Air Mail newsletter (Story recently said there that “Gray & Co. is hands down the most experienced adventure authority in my little black book”.  Talking of which, Gray & Co. has been named yet again to Condé Nast Traveler‘s the Travel Expert list, in the its “Active” category. CNT editors commended Gray & Co.’s “exceptional experiences curated with creativity, sensitivity, discretion and flawless execution”.
