The second Frieze Los Angeles took place 14-16 February 2020. Of all the art works on display none was more WOW than “Art of Perfection: Data Painting” by Turkish artist Refik Anadol – it was on show at the entrance to Belvedere restaurant at The Peninsula Beverly Hills (see a video below). The visual, moving painting was created from data captured at the Rolls-Royce surface finish centre in Goodwood, England: data relates to the colour reference of each car, plus information generated by the robotic movement required to apply the exact surface finish to each vehicle. Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös says the company’s sponsorship of Anadol will continue the Rolls-Royce legacy with a vision to expand the horizon of moving image and ignite a dialogue with some of the most exciting creative visionaries of our time.
This piece is next being shown at the Geneva International Motor Show, 5-15 March 2020. Anadol’s site-specific audio-visual performances have already been presented internationally at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; International Digital Arts Biennial, Montreal, and Arts Electronica Festival, Linz. Anadol says he is excited that Rolls-Royce is sharing their complex computational painting data to use as the raw material for his artwork: “This project is very collaborative as there is direct correlation between Rolls-Royce’s process and mine, in that we both harness machines and machine intelligence to help actualise our vision of beauty.”

This Monday, 17th February, Gucci Beverly Hills opened a rooftop restaurant, and not any old eatery but one run by Massimo Bottura, whose Osteria Francescana in Modena has twice been top of S Pellegrino’s World’s 50 Best.
