See, above, a view from my room at Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas. This is an amazing 392-room hotel that was deliberately, and uniquely, built with no integral gaming. Can you imagine it, asks Girlahead, a hotel on The Strip with not even a single fruit machine? Having started life as Mandarin Oriental, it re-positioned August 2018 as Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas. Its thoughtful GM, Chintan Dadhich, is currently being honoured by Hilton as it celebrates the internationalism of its management. See the video, below.
Hear about it here, first. BUBBLE TEA. Originating in Taiwan 30 years ago, it is named for the bubbles in tapioca balls that, for some reason (do not ask!) were put into tea and then put into a blender. Oh well, chacun à son goût. Once again The Upper House, Hong Kong, leads the way. Its latest popup showcases a hip Central (Island) takeaway outlet called Mother Pearl. Upper House is offering its signature and bestselling bubble teas. These include the classic, Taro Mo-Latte, which is high in rich dietary fibre – yes, dear friends, your tea comes with homemade taro paste, blackstrap molasses, oat cashew mylk (vegan milk) as well as ‘activated’ charcoal tapioca. Cheers!
Non-vegans might, on reflexion, be more attracted by the bottles, with another type of bubble, included as welcome to the current proposition by Brown’s Hotel in London. Confidently assuming that nearly all customers right now are from the UK, for border-control reasons, GM Stuart Johnson suggests free overnight parking for your car if you pay for double occupancy, which comes with set-menu three-course dinner by chef Adam Byatt, you buying your choice of wine, bed and breakfast. There is also credit for a drink in Donovan Bar, named for influential fashion photographer Terence Donovan, 1936-1996 (Girlahead is sure, by the way, that that much-missed maestro would approve of a current on-television competition, led by leading name Rankin, to find the top budding photographer, able to launch a brand with one single image).
And from still to moving images, let us finish today’s briefing back in Vegas, with Girlahead’s good friend Chintan:
