Lunch at the 50-room 45 Park Lane, part of the Dorchester Collection, proved to be an unusually artistic experience. The gal had wanted to catch up with John Scanlon, GM of this deliberately somewhat under-the-radar luxury hotel, and it turned out that very day was set up for an exciting art exhibit, or rather sculpture show, Osmosis, featuring works by Jill Berelowitz. This Johannesburg-based artist, now based in London, is represented by Ackerman Studios, founded by the late Roy Ackerman OBE who was largely responsible for putting pop-up art as a regular feature in so many of London’s top luxury hotels. Jill Berelowitz creates work focused on the human form and regeneration wherein bodies are simultaneously solid and abstracted, dynamic and fixed.
Well, I could not actually make out any nudes in the dozens of works which, under the guidance of her husband John Berelowitz, were being put up around the lowest two floors of 45 Park Lane, but I do know I loved the flowing shapes I saw. Interestingly, they also seemed to complement the food. 45 Park Lane’s restaurant CUT by Wolfgang Puck is not only that culinarian’s heavy concentration of meats. The restaurant cleverly offers a lunchtime steak-and-salad quickie, namely a six-ounce Hereford 28-day fillet from south-west England, with your choice of salad.
Look, however, at the lunch salad, at the top here – that is from the à la carte menu, as was my starter of Italian burrata with grilled pineapple chutney and Parma Prosciutto. I went on to a special of the day, angel hair pasta with white Alba truffles. Yes, said John Scanlon, he expects the Jill Berelowitz exhibition, which runs through to January 25th, 2019, to boost CUT covers even further. Having art around also inspires his team. Knowing about art and sculpture being temporarily displayed gives his team, which does seem to have quite a lot of Italians in it, to have something to talk about to guests. He himself has lots to talk about. As well as heading this busy 50-room hotel, he will be in charge of the adjacent 45 Park Lane Residences which Clivedale are constructing. This will also have a 20-metre pool and a full spa, adding to the appeal of this already highly popular luxury hotel.
