Saturday night saw 400 with-its celebrating the Best of the Best, as decreed by influential mouthpiece Robb Report Hong Kong – from left, above, Tak Man, publisher of Robb Report Hong Kong; Gurjeet Chima, associate VP of Robb Report brand owner Penske Media PMC; Deepak Ohri, entrepreneur; Tim Kobe, founding principal of Eight Design and responsible for many of Apple’s iconic stores; Dr Iwan Dietschi, SVP Hospitality MGM China.
The gathering was spectacular, as is everything to which Tak Man turns his hand. Arrive at MGM Grand Cotai past a guard of honour of highly-polished and highly-guarded Lamborghinis and other marques. Bollinger galore, and into the theatre, a magnificent dark midnight blue balloon-shape with, tonight, its flooring flattened. No tiered seating but gold-covered circular tables decorated with different height white candles and white and green orchids.
Other honorees tonight were McLaren for its 750-S, Santa Bella’s Danny Xiang for raising nearly $100 million for expanding superior maternity care available in such hotels as Capella Singapore, and Deepak Ohri and Tim Kobe for doing what they do best. In her acceptance speech, Girlahead relayed thoughts from ILTM Cannes, and mentioned sustainability and collaboration, and there was praise for MGM Grand Cotai and its staff, and attention to detail.
The hotel’s culinary team, working without an on-the-spot kitchen, nevertheless managed to produce and serve an exquisite dinner. Foie gras and duck confit roulades led to steamed Patagonian toothfish with Boston lobster, to a wild mushroom consommé, and thence to slow-cooked Kagoshima tenderloin that was sheer perfection – equalled in that eulogy by dark chocolate and olive oil mousse with other chocolate delights. Wines were Robert Mondavi, Escudo and Frescobaldi. Sponsoring hotel names included Aman, JOALI, Soneva and The Regent Hong Kong.
But the party did not end there. Some went on after-partying and every sensible person made it to the day-after breakfast, for networking, outstanding usual morning foods and a local Macanese specialty, beef minchi, ground beef topped by very-orange fried eggs. Best of the best 2024, how can 2025 be better?
