Germany’s logo hotel, ADLON KEMPINSKI – seen above from the top of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate – officially turns 25 this August. Girlahead salutes MD Michael Sorgenfrey for first having a party for his team, with another ‘do’, the following night, for some of those associated with this glorious icon over the last quarter century. To be technically accurate, however, there has been a building here since 1907, when a Mainz businessman, Lorenz Adlon, satisfied the Kaiser’s wish to have a grand hotel. After a convoluted hotel history, the brand was sold on to hotelier Karl-Th Walterspiel, who later, coincidentally, was Michael Sorgenfrey’s first-ever GM in Hamburg.
And so, despite its history, the name Adlon is ageless. Girlahead meanders to other ageless icons. In another sphere completely think Martha Stewart, now aged 80. This February, the world’s most celebrated domesticity virtuoso went viral with five startlingly sassy, coquettish, goofy, rambunctious video ads for Clé de Peau, a Japanese skin care and makeup company, for wanted to target 13- to 25-year olds on TikTok. In the first seven weeks after posting on both TikTok and Instagram, they had a total 78 million views. The one that begins with her saying, “I hear you’re looking for the perfect recipe for hydrated skin” got 47.9 million views.
There are creators today who plan for an ageless future. In Miami, it seems Mayor Francis Suarez wants his city to be seen as the future of eternity, thanks to crypto. At the recent Miami Beach Convention Center’s recent 30,000-strong Bitcoin 2022 conference, he pulled back a blue shroud to reveal the Miami Bull, a 3,000-pound futuristic statue modelled after Wall Street’s iconic Charging Bull. The bull will later be installed at the Miami Dade College Wolfson campus. TheMiami area does already have some ageless hotels, say THE BILTMORE in Coral Gables, Miami Beach FONTAINEBLEAU and THE BREAKERS. In future, Miami Beach’s THE BETSY and THE SETAI will undoubtedly join the list. Think the ageless future, now.
